    He was given two letters.
    He answered with a wall.

    The Synopsis

Dear Wall, a novel by Maria Rago, in four parts across nearly a century.

    WHY DEAR WALL MATTERS

    The Story

In 1927 a clerk in Rome writes two letters in a ledger beside a newborn: NN, nessun nome, no name. His mother calls him Fernando. He is handed from a charity institution to a home for children to a hospital, and in 1948, after a shouted argument with a minor official, a tired magistrate decides he needs a diagnosis rather than a cell. He is twenty-one. He will not live outside an institution’s walls again for twenty-five years.

Transferred to San Girolamo in Volterra in 1958, Fernando finds that the buckle of his belt cuts a thin line into the courtyard plaster. He rules a frame, the way a scribe rules a page, and writes his name and one sentence inside it. Over the following decade, he fills the yard wall with ranks no tribunal granted him, a family invented to replace the one that never came, and a quiet count of the men who died on his ward.

A nurse on the Ferri ward notices what everyone else has walked past. Aldo Ferretti buys a notebook, copies a single section, and keeps copying for more than forty years, through a marriage that pays for it, through reforms that empty the hospital, and long after Fernando has gone. Dear Wall follows the wall itself out of the yard and into a photograph, a book, an essay and finally a gallery, where the salvaged plaster hangs behind glass in 2026.
